Cover Roulette: The Handmaid’s Tale

I did my first cover roulette post a little while ago for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and it was so fun I wanted to do another! Luckily I found another popular book that has had many different editions made, and I wondered…

What other awesome covers have I missed?

Tonight’s book is one I have, somehow, still not read. It’s been on my shelf since I was in high school. It’s now a tv mini series (or something like that?). I even read the graphic novel recently, which ultimately just made me think I should really read the original. Well, before I get to The Handmaid’s Tale, lets take a look at some of the covers!

The Cover I Know

Okay, to be honest, part of why I probably never ended up reading this when I was younger was because this dowdy cover was next to flashy shiny ones with dragons and magic on my bookshelf. And, let’s be real, that’s still the case. But I’ll still read this… eventually. ☺

A Picture’s Worth: Evil Gods and Introverts

Words have always carried more weight with me than images – give me a book over its movie any day – but I do love to see the beautiful images other people create when they’re in love with a book. That’s not my strength, but I can certainly appreciate it in others! So here’s a few of my faves based on what I’ve been reading recently.

Master of Sorrows

I’m completely thrilled that Blackstone Publishing got me a copy of Master of Sorrows to read before its U.S. publish date in Feb 2020. And, y’all, this book does not pull any punches. In fact, it throws a lot of them, sometimes with a fist infused with the earth-power of a God. And if that tag line doesn’t get you, what will??

A Picture’s Worth: Corpses and Young Love

Words have always carried more weight with me than images – give me a book over its movie any day – but I do love to see the beautiful images other people create when they’re in love with a book. That’s not my strength, but I can certainly appreciate it in others! So here’s a few of my faves based on what I’ve been reading recently.

If you’ve read either of these and loved them too, vote for them in the Goodreads Choice Awards!

If you haven’t read either, you should definitely do so!

Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs

I’m a huge fan of quirky science-based nonfiction (like What If by Randall Munroe) so this was a perfect addition to my collection. I love Doughty’s humour throughout, and the fact that she doesn’t shy away from being really really honest about some of the more grisly or cringey aspects of life after death. See my full review of her book here!

They’re considering it… you can tell…

A picture’s worth: Vampires & Hell

Words have always carried more weight with me than images – give me a book over its movie any day – but I do love to see the beautiful images other people create when they’re in love with a book. That’s not my strength, but I can certainly appreciate it in others! So here’s a few of my faves based on what I’ve been reading recently.

Noblesse

This had been on my list for a while and for whatever reason it popped up as a recommended item on Webtoon. I happened to be in the market for a new webcomic to start, so I dove right in! Biggest issue: frickin’ Shinwu’s nose is never going to heal. Frankly if I had seen this fan art earlier, I probably would have started this series a lot sooner. It’s dark and has a beautiful art style, but is also absolutely hilarious at times!

I seem to have a thing with Frankenstein lately, and I’m not mad that the trend is continuing.

Even M-21 is looking like a hero now! Love that character development, though M-24 breaks my poor little heart.

The Library of the Unwritten

I had been looking forward to this for a while before it finally released, and though it’s a little different than I had expected, I’m really enjoying it! I’ve rarely been more interested in going to Hell, especially if Heaven is absent all books. That’s not my kind of paradise, thank you. This book has heroes crawling out of the pages, trips to other realms of belief, and the Devil’s Bible threatening to unleash a new war between aspects of the afterlife. What’s not to like?

I’m pretty sad I missed this sweet author swag. I’m not big on tote bags, but I promise this would have become a regular rotation item for me because IT’S AMAZING.

A picture’s worth: Royalty & Other Monsters

Words have always carried more weight with me than images – give me a book over its movie any day – but I do love to see the beautiful images other people create when they’re in love with a book. That’s not my strength, but I can certainly appreciate it in others! So here’s a few of my faves based on what I’ve been reading recently.

The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein

You’re probably getting sick of me posting about this book but OH MY GOD I LOVE IT SO MUCH! I hope I continue to love it as much as the people below did to put these setups together.

Jennie Shaw putting together this perfectly creepy setup for this tale
I’M IN LOVE. How do you do that so cleanly, Jennie?! Teach me your ways! Also LOVE the brilliance of pairing the books with a custom nail design to reflect it.

It’s Here! It’s Here!!

So I posted recently in a Cover Roulette post about how I was waiting for the new illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and TODAY. IS. THE DAY.

The smoke around the tail! The bones underneath! The egg below it! The banners on the wall! The people in the stands! THE DRAGON ITSELF!
The front page – but trust me, it takes a dark turn on the next.

This was one of the longer books, so this version took TWO YEARS to complete, which I totally understand. And it’s also pretty dang heavy, so this is a couch-and-bed read for sure.

It’s completely gorgeous and please excuse me while I abandon all other responsibilities and books to re-read this stunning version of this amazing story. 😍

I am grateful for Jim Kay.

Cover Roulette: City of Bones

I did my first cover roulette post a little while ago for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and it was so fun I wanted to do another! Luckily I found another popular series that has had many different editions made, and I wondered…

What other awesome covers have I missed?

Tonight’s featured book is City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. When this series first came out, I was immediately sucked in. It’s one of the few series I ever started when it first came out and had to actually wait for the new books to come out! It’s also one of the first series that made me think, “Wow, that cover is so pretty I would buy it just to look at it on my shelves.”

The Cover I Know

The coloring! It’s so ominous and creepy, and the weird swirling tattoos on Dude’s body were intriguing. I knew magic would be involved for sure, and I’m always down for magic. The demons were just a bonus!

Cover Roulette: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

At some point recently, I was looking for an alternate edition on Goodreads to match the one I had actually read. Simple enough. But then I noticed that some of the other editions of the book had some seriously dope covers! Got me to thinking…

What other books have covers I’ve never seen?

If you have no idea what the illustrated editions of Harry Potter are, THEY ARE INCREDIBLE. Huge, beautiful illustrations. Hardbound book. Built-in bookmark ribbon. Definitely check them out, because it 100% brings the stories to life in a really wonderful way. You can see some of the artwork by Jim Kay on his website, and trust me, they look even better on the big printed pages.

So in honor of my excitement over Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Illustrated Edition by Jim Kay coming out on October 8th (less than a month!!!) here are some of my favorite covers for it, from around the world and through the years.

The Cover I Know

Published 2000. So this is the cover I’m familiar with. You’ve got the signature font for his name, Harry front and center with his fellow champions of the Goblet behind him, a spiny dragon tail in front of him, egg and wand in hand, and in the back there, a shadowy hooded figure…
