Top Ten Tuesday: Books I’d Recommend for Classroom Reading

Hey y’all! Top Ten Tuesday is a bookish question idea that was originally created and hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, from way back in June 2010! Since January 2018, Top Ten Tuesday has been hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Thanks for taking it over! The idea is to make a list of ten books or bookish things on different topics each week. Check out her site for details on how to join and what the upcoming prompts are. 😊 You can also see all the posts from other bloggers linked on each weekly post on their main site.

This week’s prompt is a freebie that can be school themed. As a teacher in the past with a lot of friends who still teach, I’m often thinking about what books I’d recommend to them to use with their students or have in the classroom for any free reading time. I’m going to try to list books for multiple classes, because “English class” is such an easy obvious one and there can be so much more range!!

The Books

The classrooms

History: Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys

I don’t know about y’all, but I had never heard about the Wilhelm Gustloff, but this book is a piece of history where you know the ending and the stories to get there are so bittersweet because of it.

Top Ten Tuesday: Books that made me laugh (plus crowdsourced list!)

Hey y’all! Top Ten Tuesday is a bookish question idea that was originally created and hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, from way back in June 2010! This week’s prompt was for funny book titles, but the only one I could think of even close to this was Let’s Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson, which is only funny to me because I know what the style of her writing in it is.

Instead, I’m switching this up to be books that made me laugh, which is actually a post I did a year or two ago but still tracks. Maybe I’ll do a new list soon but for today this works! This list has both nonfiction and fiction, and a brief description of the kind of humor in each. 🙂

Crowdsourced List

The second part of this is a look at what books other have posted for today’s actual prompt. I’ve done this once or twice before for other Top Ten Tuesday prompts and had a lot of fun with it! Plus I’m curious what others have found, and if there even ARE any that multiple people mention. Let’s see…

August 2022 TBR: I mean, not much?

Hey y’all! Somehow, as I’m looking at my planned reads for August, I’m not seeing much. I had 4 books on my list, and one of them I’ve already finished. So this month will probably end up being a bit of a mishmash of whatever I happen to pick off my shelves or get from the library. I’ve managed to up if to 6 (one complete) based on what I’m already starting this month. Let’s take a peek!

No rhymes

The Reasons

You’re Invited by Amanda Jayatissa: already finished! I got a BOTM copy secondhand but still before the publish date next week (8/9/22), and WOW was it way better than I expected. This one is already done!

Pictured: not how the book happens, but imagine if it did?

Top Ten Tuesday: Places in Books I Wanna Go!!!

Hey y’all! Top Ten Tuesday is a bookish question idea that was originally created and hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, from way back in June 2010! This week’s prompt is place I want to go that I’ve read about in books, whether real or fake. This is insanely easy for me both because I love to travel physically, and because I read a TON of books set in places I’ve never been around the world. That’s a specific draw for me. 🙂

I did have a weird moment of realization during this though. Since fictional places are also included in today’s list options, I got to thinking how there didn’t seem to be any fictional place I’d ever want to visit because in books they’re always so violent and dangerous and a million things could kill me. This was followed by me thinking how someone from one of those places would view Earth and/or the United States. And I was shocked when I realized, oh… they might feel the same. 😅 War and human rights issues constantly, a car might run you over, some places on Earth have now become literally too hot for humans to live anymore… there are definitely some issues here, even if they aren’t literal dragons. I mean, heck, we even had a recent plague!

Side note: reading about real current events in a dramatized, fictionalized way would be cool. I’d read that news site.

Anyway. The list.

The Books

Approximately arranged by how far away they are from me currently.

The Places

The Cat I Never Named: Bihac, Bosnia

Because this book was incredible and more than enough to make me fall in love with Bosnia and want to see where they’re at now, knowing the history.

Top Ten Tuesday: Books in past TBRs that I still haven’t read 😅

Hey y’all! Top Ten Tuesday is a bookish question idea that was originally created and hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, from way back in June 2010! Today’s prompt (submitted by Dedra at A Book Wanderer) is books from past seasonal TBRs that I still haven’t read. I don’t really do seasonal TBRs, though, so I’m just pulling from my monthly ones that I typically do. I definitely have some that got shoved out for a month, then two, then three, then quietly dropped off the list and back onto the shelves. xD

The Books

The Reasoning

I do have some ideas as to why these books get pushed, at least in some cases. Others are just an inexplicable shrug. 🤷‍♀️ But some of the reasons are:

Top Ten Tuesday: Super summery book covers (plus crowdsourced list!)

This week’s prompt (by Ellie @ Curiosity Killed the Bookworm) is for books with covers that feel like summer. Like sunshine, and smores, and fireflies, and swimming, and flirting, and playfulness, and potential. All that: in a book cover. I thought this would be a hard one, but I ended up having to cut a bunch out of my list! 😊

The Books

The Thoughts

I’ve read about half of these, although it’s a CRIME that I never reviewed Siri, Who Am I? because that book was SO SO SO much better than I expected and genuinely funny and thoughtful and unexpected. 😁

Top Ten Tuesday: Anticipated releases for the rest of 2022 (crowdsourced list!)

This week’s prompt is books I’m excited for that are releasing sometime in the rest of 2022. I’m taking a different approach with this week’s prompt and instead of making my own list, I’m looking at what others have posted for today’s prompt and picking new-to-me books from THEIR list that I think look good. I’ve only heard of one or two of the ones on my list below, but I’m so excited to have all of them added! Thanks y’all! 🥰

There’s not much book info here — sorry, I’m super tired today lol — but the cover links to the blog where I found it, and the name of the blog is included (and also linked).

20 (well, 15) books of summer sign up!

Hey y’all! I’ve seen a few folks (Misty, Carla, Dini) posting about joining a reading goal for the summer of 20 books from June 1st (whoops) to September 1st. I’m a bit late, but I wanted to join in! The catch, if you don’t mind me calling it that, is to also review all of the books read in that time / chosen list. Which is where my strength tends to fail me. xD

So since I’m late and am not sure I’ll read 20 more books in the next two months, I’m going to try this year out at 15! Maybe next year I’ll start on time and give it a 20, but I’m already 5 books in to June right now so I’ve shot myself in the foot a bit with this. For my purposes, I’m also going to include books as counted if I DNF them (and review them for why!) since that means I gave it a shot and got it off my list.

Anyway! The original challenge is created and hosted at 746 Books, and you can check out the details and snag some pretty graphics if you want to join as well. You can comment on their sign up post to add your own too!

I’m going to add these as more of categories than specific book list. For example, I’ll add Sankofa to this list as a book to read, but any Book of the Month book that I haven’t read will fill that slot if not that book. Covers link to Goodreads or my review once it’s up! I’ll update the covers with the books I actually end up using, as well, but my original list includes my first-picked titles. 🙂

Top Ten Tuesday: Books with a unit of time in the title

Hey y’all! Top Ten Tuesday is a bookish question idea that was originally created and hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, from way back in June 2010! This week’s prompt is books with a unit of time in the title. I’m going to try to get a bunch of different ranges of time (seconds, minutes, years, etc) to see how large a range I can get! Organized from smallest to biggest and each one is defined by the previous (with one or two exceptions that were a little weird to do that way xD).

Top Ten Tuesday: Books I was pumped to get but… still haven’t read 😅

This week’s prompt is about books that you bought and were super excited about and just HAD to get your hands on a copy of your own because you were desperate to start it T H A T S E C O N D and now it has been many, many seconds and you have not read it.

I don’t do this often because I don’t buy that many physical copies of books. When I do, it’s typically used and it’s typically books I haven’t heard of before the moment I buy them. That means I’m hyped to read it because I have barely actually heard of it. When I DO buy new books, it’s usually one I’ve already read and would like to have a copy of for re-reads. So I already know the story. xD I don’t have a lot to work with on this prompt, but here are a few I could think of, arranged from most recently added to furthest back added.

The List of Shame

The Excuses…

The Elder Scrolls Online: Tales of Tamriel – December 20, 2021

I didn’t read it yet because it’s too pretty to take out of the package.
