A Picture’s Worth: Curses and Gaming

Words have always carried more weight with me than images – give me a book over its movie any day – but I do love to see the beautiful images other people create when they’re in love with a book. That’s not my strength, but I can certainly appreciate it in others! So here’s a few of my faves based on what I’ve been reading recently.

Don’t Date Rosa Santos

I saw this on Hoopla over the summer and had it earmarked for when I was looking for a quickly available light read, and that time has finally come! The details of it have given me a lot of laughs so far, and the story and cover were pretty much perfectly designed for gorgeous photos.

I feel like she captures the flowing, free spirit of Rosa very well here; and the iconic yellow dress!

A Picture’s Worth: Shattered Homes & Shattered Worlds

The Seventh Sun

I was SO EXCITED to get this ARC, and the book didn’t disappoint, either! Check out the review and then drool over the gorgeous photos people made with the striking and dramatic cover art. I’m sure after the official publication there will be so much gorgeous fan art and other creativity around the lush Mayan world Lani Forbes created. Expected publication is February 18, 2020, and I promise you should be counting down the days.

I’m a crazy fan of Blackstone Publishing, and their photographer for their social is fantastic.

A Picture’s Worth: Failure & Typewriters

Again, But Better

I’d been planning to read this one for a while, and finally got around to it when I saw it on the Goodreads Choice nominees list. I voted for a different book, and I’m glad I did, because this one was pretty disappointing. 😐 But the pictures below are gorgeous, at least!

Clever play with the colors on the cover, and also WOW do they have a lot of very specifically colored books. I imagine they had to reorganize to get this picture.

Another play with color here, but this one also embracing her student life

OOOOOOOH, is this a cover roulette feature preview I’m sensing?!

Miss Iceland

This was an ARC I got for the English translation publication, though the book has been out in other languages already. And other covers. This has basically turned into a cover roulette post. 😂 I’ll be honest, this book didn’t really do it for me, with the cover or the content inside.

This is the cover I’ve seen most, and it seems to be the French version.

And our first alternate cover, this one in Italian

And our Swedish version, which makes it look like a Nicholas Sparks co-op

And just for comparison, this is the cover I’m familiar with for the English version. QUITE a range they have here!

And so…

Well, I didn’t actually like either of these books very much, and their covers aren’t blowing me away either. However, as always, others who liked one or the other have made lovely photos to showcase them, and I appreciate their time and effort!

A Picture’s Worth: Evil Gods and Introverts

Words have always carried more weight with me than images – give me a book over its movie any day – but I do love to see the beautiful images other people create when they’re in love with a book. That’s not my strength, but I can certainly appreciate it in others! So here’s a few of my faves based on what I’ve been reading recently.

Master of Sorrows

I’m completely thrilled that Blackstone Publishing got me a copy of Master of Sorrows to read before its U.S. publish date in Feb 2020. And, y’all, this book does not pull any punches. In fact, it throws a lot of them, sometimes with a fist infused with the earth-power of a God. And if that tag line doesn’t get you, what will??

A Picture’s Worth: Corpses and Young Love

If you’ve read either of these and loved them too, vote for them in the Goodreads Choice Awards!

If you haven’t read either, you should definitely do so!

Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs

I’m a huge fan of quirky science-based nonfiction (like What If by Randall Munroe) so this was a perfect addition to my collection. I love Doughty’s humour throughout, and the fact that she doesn’t shy away from being really really honest about some of the more grisly or cringey aspects of life after death. See my full review of her book here!

They’re considering it… you can tell…

Noblesse

This had been on my list for a while and for whatever reason it popped up as a recommended item on Webtoon. I happened to be in the market for a new webcomic to start, so I dove right in! Biggest issue: frickin’ Shinwu’s nose is never going to heal. Frankly if I had seen this fan art earlier, I probably would have started this series a lot sooner. It’s dark and has a beautiful art style, but is also absolutely hilarious at times!

I seem to have a thing with Frankenstein lately, and I’m not mad that the trend is continuing.

Even M-21 is looking like a hero now! Love that character development, though M-24 breaks my poor little heart.

The Library of the Unwritten

I had been looking forward to this for a while before it finally released, and though it’s a little different than I had expected, I’m really enjoying it! I’ve rarely been more interested in going to Hell, especially if Heaven is absent all books. That’s not my kind of paradise, thank you. This book has heroes crawling out of the pages, trips to other realms of belief, and the Devil’s Bible threatening to unleash a new war between aspects of the afterlife. What’s not to like?

I’m pretty sad I missed this sweet author swag. I’m not big on tote bags, but I promise this would have become a regular rotation item for me because IT’S AMAZING.

The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein

You’re probably getting sick of me posting about this book but OH MY GOD I LOVE IT SO MUCH! I hope I continue to love it as much as the people below did to put these setups together.

Jennie Shaw putting together this perfectly creepy setup for this tale
I’M IN LOVE. How do you do that so cleanly, Jennie?! Teach me your ways! Also LOVE the brilliance of pairing the books with a custom nail design to reflect it.
