Hey y’all! Top Ten Tuesday is a bookish question idea that was originally created and hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, from way back in June 2010! Since January 2018, Top Ten Tuesday has been hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Thanks for taking it over! The idea is to make a list of ten books or bookish things on different topics each week. Check out her site for details on how to join and what the upcoming prompts are. 😊 You can also see all the posts from other bloggers linked on each weekly post on their main site.
This week’s post theme is ten books with something on the cover, with each person choosing what thing they want to focus on! I originally thought water, and ended up being super surprised at how few books I had with actual water on the cover. And then also being surprised at how many had animals on the cover.
I ended up pivoting, and I found so many animals that this week’s post is books I’ve actually read before that have animals on the cover, while I’ll do another one later on with books I want to read that have animals on the cover. I’m also trying not to duplicate animals, just to make it more fun! 🙂

The books
- SCORPION – The Kinder Poison by Natalie Mae
- FOX – The Fox & Little Tanuki, Vol. 1 by Mi Tagawa
- CAT – The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa
- CAT – The Cat I Never Named by Amra Sabic-El-Rayess,
- DOG – China Rich Girlfriend by Kevin Kwan
- SQUIRREL – The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Vol. 3: Squirrel, You Really Got Me Now by Ryan North & Erica Henderson
- WHALE – The Whale Library by Zidrou
- MANTICORE – A Spell for Chameleon by Piers Anthony
- MOUSE – Let’s Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson
- MOUSE – Maus I: A Survivor’s Tale: My Father Bleeds History by Art Spiegelman
- BIRD (CROW) – Gingerbread by Helen Oyeyemi
- BIRD (HUMMINGBIRD) – Island Affair by Priscilla Oliveras
- RACCOON – Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson
- OCTOPUS – The Soul of an Octopus by Sy Montgomery
- BULL – Bull by David Elliott
- HORSE – The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
- SWANS – Sapphique by Catherine Fisher
- BUTTERFLY – Fragile Eternity by Melissa Marr
- PENGUINS – Bleaker House: Chasing My Novel to the End of the World by Nell Stevens

That’s what I found for this week’s theme y’all! Do you have any favorite books with animals on the cover?

I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a book with a scorpion on the cover before. Very cool!

So many animals! I love it 😍 I would probably struggle to find this many animals on the covers of my reads! Furiously Happy is on my TBR and that cover gets me every time 😂

It alllllways makes me smile, both the actual look of it, and the story behind it. Rory the Raccoon!

If it’s Jenny Lawson’s book, mine too! I found it in a second hand shop because of the cover!

Wow. The cover for The Cat I Never Named is beautiful and it sounds like an incredible and emotional book. Thanks for putting it on my radar!

Yes!! So happy too! It’s a really incredible book, definitely the best I read in the year I read it.

Wow, that’s a lot of different animals! Though now I’m curious how easy it would be to find a list of book covers that each had different birds on them (since you called out 4 of them in your list that I counted—crow, hummingbird, swan, and penguin). Maybe I’ll revisit that one when I need to pivot from a TTT prompt.

Pffft I totally didn’t even think about the fact that swans and penguins are also birds. xD I guess because they’re different shapes and sizes from the more “standard” hummingbird and crow setup?

LOL! They are bigger birds for sure, and that kinds puts them in their own category. 😀

That scorpion really caught my attention. The first animal that would come to mind if I did this topic was a snake. There are so many books with snakes. I think I’m partial to books with birds on them. Great picks!

Wow, I can’t believe I forgot a snake one. I had Serpent & Dove in mind to add over Girl, Serpent, Thorn and I guess I just skipped it. xD

What a cute topic. I did one with animals ages ago when the real topic was “Top Ten Characters I’d Name a Pet After”. LOL
Thanks for visiting my TTT this week which has books with maps on the cover.

Fun topic! I’m impressed at how many different kinds of animals you found on book covers. Who knew there were so many with animals on them?
Happy TTT (on a Wednesday)!

I guess animals are thematic and relatable for a lot of people. Plus just cute ^.^ Look at that little penguin holding a book page!

Ooh I love that penguin one! I had a horse on one of my cover choices this week, but animals was not my theme.
